We recognize that it takes an enormous amount of courage to seek help. We understand mental wellness can be an ongoing and difficult process for both the individual seeking help and their loved ones. We know each step towards wellness takes a team and we are just one piece of that puzzle. We are here to help patients put the pieces back together.
SBC-Wilmington has been the leader in behavioral health care in North Carolina for almost a decade. SBC-Wilmington is a 112-bed state-of-the-art mental health hospital and includes our new 20-bed unit for aging adults and seniors. Each unit within the hospital is designed to support the specific needs of the patients we serve.
We serve two distinct populations: Children and adolescents and adults age 55 and older. Children and adolescents admitted to our hospital present with behavioral health challenges requiring immediate and long-term support. Based on individual needs and presenting behaviors, children are admitted to either our acute or residential program.
The new 20-bed coed inpatient unit for patients aged 55 and older is designed to stabilize behaviors in older adults who may be suffering from depression, difficult to treat mood disorders, psychosis and co-occurring disorders.
The Strategic Behavioral Center team is both passionate and compassionate about those we serve. We recognize emotional and behavioral problems can affect all areas of a person’s life. Our individualized treatment programs are tailored to address each person’s unique challenges and needs.
Each treatment team will assist patients with finding and using the tools they need to be able to build a healthier, more positive life. Throughout the treatment experience, we work together with our patients and their families to encourage the best possible outcome and ongoing plan for success.

This is the first step towards improving your overall well-being. An assessment is a clinical interview to determine what type of behavioral health services is most appropriate. A mastered prepared clinician will ask about current concerns as well as past medical and mental health history. If applicable, any drug and/or alcohol abuse will be assessed. Family members or a friend may be present during the assessment process, as this may be helpful for assistance and support. This assessment is used to determine which programs or services would be most beneficial, we offer inpatient, outpatient and partial programs. Once the assessment is complete, our clinician will consult with our Psychiatrist regarding the recommendation and then make a determination about treatment options.
Simply call us at (855) 537-2262 (toll free) for a free, confidential assessment. A clinician will take your call, ask a series of questions, and determine if a face-to-face assessment is the appropriate next step. Our goal is to schedule the assessment as soon as possible, and same day assessments are available 24/7.
The team consists of psychiatrists, physical health doctors, therapists, nurses and mental health technicians. These team members work together to ensure each patient receives a high level of quality care throughout their time in our program.
We take great care to ensure our patients feel safe, comfortable and welcomed in our environment. We have thoughtfully designed our hospital to be as therapeutic as possible with outdoor courtyards, gymnasiums and plenty of windows allowing the natural light to enter rooms.
Strategic Behavioral Center takes the mystery out of trying to find out how to get an assessment. Our assessors are available 24/7 to take your call, answer your questions and do an assessment. Any person can call us and you do not need a formal outside referral to receive an assessment from our clinicians.
Strategic Behavioral Center takes a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure each patient receives individualized quality care in a therapeutic environment. We understand behavioral health treatment is not a “one size fits all” and our team works with the patient and their families to work towards the best outcome.
Our team understands the diverse groups of people we serve come with special therapeutic considerations. The structure of our hospital’s programs ensures all the patients receive age-appropriate treatment related to individual therapy, group therapy, recreational therapy and medication management. Our programming is delivered separately between our seniors, adults and adolescent age groups.
“Strategic was so good and communicating and answering questions. Your staff was absolutely awesome, so kind and helpful. Rachel, Dr. Adams and Jackie in intake all went above and beyond. Everybody made a very difficult situation as easy as possible for us”
I love working with the children here at Strategic and knowing that what I do is affecting their future!
It is so rewarding to know that you are making a difference in a child’s life. All of our jobs here at SBC are important, and even though I am not working directly with the children I know that my work is going toward their success.
“As a teacher, the influence I have in supporting a student is significant. I reinforce the understanding that each new day brings great opportunities to choose the positives for their education and to better their life with those around them. I can honestly say that after 6 years at SBC I am still excited and happy to be here each day.”
“Very Professional staff, very courteous and most of all very genuine – I appreciate that most of all! I can’t say enough good things about the nursing staff and my son’s therapist.”
